On March 14, the world will celebrate the mathematical constant π. Yes, it’s Pi Day. Which, for me, honestly, is just a good excuse to eat a slice of the other kind of pie. The one with a flaky crust and fruit baked to perfection. Around here, we love pie so much, the unofficial theme of this issue is “pie.” Our Eat feature takes a close look at the story behind Noble Folk, the new ice cream and pie shop in Santa Rosa owned by Sonoma County locals Osvaldo Jimenez and Christian Sullberg. And don’t miss the great profile by Melinda Misuraca of Shannon Moore from Flour Girl, who makes pies (and cakes and cookies and pretty much any other delicious baked good you can think of) on the northern edge of our fair county. She’s gained quite the following, and you’ll definitely want to seek out her sweet treats the next time you’re in Cloverdale. I know I will.
In this issue, pie isn’t just a food, it’s a metaphor. Take a look at our interview with Graton Day Labor Center Board Chair Jesús Guzmán, the author of a recent report commissioned by North Bay Jobs with Justice on the state of working Sonoma. Hint: Low-wage food workers are not getting a piece of the pie, to say the least. Plus, we’ve got an exploration of small but mighty climate-beneficial farming at Wild Oat Hollow farm in Penngrove, a jaunt through downtown Santa Rosa happy hours with former Made Local Magazine editor Gretchen Giles, and a venture with intrepid reporter Dani Burlison into Fern Bar, the new plant and drink pleasure dome in Sebastopol, where pickled quail eggs and a flaming rosemary-stick laden Moscow Mule left her wanting to linger there for a few days.
Here at Made Local Magazine we have a passion for the Sonoma County food system. Please get in touch. Send story tips, thoughts, and comments to the email address below. We’d love to hear from you!
