On purpose, belonging, and social change
By Lisa Ludwigsen
In that spirit of cooperation, a small group of Petalumans have created the Mosquito Brigade. The Mosquitos describe themselves as a group of concerned neighbors engaging the community in pro-democracy, nonviolent coordinated actions. The name originates from a quote attributed to the Dalai Lama: “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”
Meeting over cookies, fruit, and tea in living rooms, the Mosquitos plan small gestures—creating stickers, buttons, yard signs, and participating in grassroots activities like freeway overpass protests. A subgroup also visits local businesses, sharing information and resources for business owners to use in case of immigration visits. They have visited over 150 businesses so far.
Cofounder Pete Gang shared, “In a thousand ways, our world tries to convince us that we are individual and separate—and alone. It’s easy to feel afraid and powerless. The Mosquito Brigade serves at least two purposes: First, we remind ourselves that our neighbors are feeling the same murky emotions that we ourselves are feeling; and also, taking action is way more effective and fun if done by groups.”
Though taken individually the Mosquitos’ efforts may appear insignificant, the broad effects are impactful. The brainstorming and execution of small projects is a natural community builder. Neighbors who were strangers are connecting, and new friendships are forged. For anyone looking for a measure of comfort and an answer to the question, “In a world that can seem out of control, what can one person do?” Groups like the Mosquitos can help. It is community building that strengthens the fabric of our places.
Although primarily intended for veterans in war-torn regions, Junger’s Tribe reveals lessons for all of us by providing historical context for how people have pulled together to persevere. As Junger states, “We have a strong instinct to belong to small groups defined by clear purpose and understanding.”
This is a great time to join or start a group.
