Winged Wonders at Sonoma Botanical Gardens
This summer and fall, Sonoma Botanical Garden (SBG) soars to new heights. Winged Wonders, an outdoor exhibition of massive bamboo bird sculptures, takes over the landscape with a playful, eco-conscious twist to traditional garden art.
Created by Boston-based duo Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein, aka The Myth Makers, these huge avian sculptures—some soaring up to 20 feet tall—are crafted entirely from natural materials. Expect to spot an enormous Acorn Woodpecker among the oaks, a giant Anna’s Hummingbird, and a larger-than-life Western Meadowlark and California Quail keeping watch over the trails. Inspired by native California birds, these works celebrate our region’s unique ecosystems and the deep connection between plants and wildlife.
“We are thrilled to welcome this extraordinary exhibition to Sonoma Botanical Garden,” says Jeannie Perales, executive director, SBG. “These monumental sculptures of native California birds are not only an artistic achievement but also a reminder of the vital relationship between plants and birds. This exhibit allows us to showcase the Garden’s incredible biodiversity and offer visitors a chance to connect with nature in a way that is both educational and engaging.”
The Myth Makers have installed their avian creations worldwide, and Winged Wonders marks their first major California project.
While you’re visiting, take time to wander the 67 acres of stunning scenery, where rare Asian plants meet California’s native flora along shaded woodland paths and sunny oak savannas. And if you want more, Sonoma Botanical Garden hosts birding tours, photography workshops, and live music events as part of its Acoustic Sunsets concert series.
