This time of year, our thoughts turn to the garden. Whether it’s food, flowers, or perfecting the landscaping, there is plenty to keep us humming in the yard. This summer, tired of battling gophers, deer, and turkeys, I’ve turned my attention to the front porch where I’m planting veggies in pots. Nice and safe where I can keep my eye on them.
Anyone trying new things in the garden has a wonderful resource for assistance and support—the Master Gardeners of Sonoma County. Learn the surprising extent of what they offer and meet the enthusiastic local crew in this issue. We also check in with Petaluma Bounty as they work to continue the urban farm and community advocacy under new leadership.
Evan Wiig reports on opportunities arising for local farmers as vineyard acreage is repurposed during shifts in the wine industry. In these changing times, Santa Rosa-based Sonoma Restorations artfully transforms the history and heritage of wine country into handmade furniture and décor that anchors us in this place.
California Native Table by Nicole Lim of the California Native American Museum offers a recipe for a versatile mixed berry vinaigrette, along with context for why strawberries are important to local tribal communities. And we’ve profiled Songbird Parlour, a gem of a restaurant in Glen Ellen, bringing local food and community to sumptuous new heights.
As always, we are at no loss for things to do in Sonoma County. Let’s make sure we take care of each other and appreciate this beautiful place we call home.
