Bartholomew Park
Sip, Stroll, and Savor Wine History
Those looking to impress out-of-town guests or a special date, or just want to enjoy the day in nature need look no further than Bartholomew Park in Sonoma. The expansive vineyards, gardens, and forests are a preserved space where visitors can hike, enjoy lunch and wine at Bartholomew Estate Winery—located within the historic park—and appreciate its rich history.
Owned and operated by the Frank H. Bartholomew Foundation, the 375-acre park was once the home and vineyards of Count Agoston Haraszthy and is considered the birthplace of California’s wine industry. Over the past 160 years, this place has transformed over and over—including the establishment of the largest winery in America, the devastation of phylloxera outbreaks, a grand Victorian castle—home to many colorful characters—and culminating in the Bartholomew family’s restoration of the land to the park you see today.
Bartholomew Park is now a destination for those looking to explore its scenic hiking trails and immerse themselves in wine history. For a unique experience, visitors can also book a horseback ride through the vineyards with Sonoma Valley Trail Rides.
A special highlight of the park is Bartholomew Estate Winery, where guests are invited to sample their wines and enjoy culinary delights, with proceeds preserving and protecting the park. Guest chefs like Christina Topham from Sonoma’s Spread Kitchen provide a tasty lunch before or after your hike (or even without a hike!). Opened in 2019 by Anna Pope and winemaker Kevin Holt, the winery preserves Bartholomew Park while offering estate-grown and off-property sustainable wines. Their inventive events and acclaimed wines—like Garden Block Zinfandel and Estate Cabernet—are quickly making waves in Sonoma’s wine scene.
With its fascinating history, stunning landscape, and welcoming atmosphere, Bartholomew Park offers an idyllic retreat for nature lovers, wine enthusiasts, and history buffs alike.
